Which animals eat only plants?

Most herbivore animals eat only plants. In the animal kingdom, herbivores are animals that feed exclusively on plants. The word ‘herbivore’ is derived from two Latin words: herba meaning grass and voro meaning “to devour.” However, not all grass-eating animals are true herbivores (e.g., rabbits). They include mammals such as rabbits and deer, reptiles like the tortoise, and insects such as aphids and locusts.

Animals that animals eat only plants include:

1) Koalas

Koalas are primarily herbivores but will sometimes eat insects, including some spider species that live on trees. Koalas eat around 15% of their body weight in foliage every day, usually eucalyptus and gum leaves.

2) Sloths

Sloths are primarily herbivores, but they will eat some insects. Sloths eat various leaves, flowers, fruits, and berries that include the sap from tree bark. These animals wouldn’t survive for long if they had to catch their prey – they’re just too slow!
They should be called Slows! However, these animals eat only plants, and I love them that way.

3) Squirrels

Squirrels eat a variety of vegetation: flowers, bark, berries, and nuts. They also enjoy eating insects and even carrion.

4Rabbits

Rabbits are primarily herbivores and will eat small amounts of grasses, grains, flowers, fungi, bark, plants, green leaves, root vegetables, and a variety of weeds.

5Sheep

Sheep are primarily herbivorous animals and will graze on pasture or hay to get the nutrients they need. They will also eat sprouts, flowers, and green leaves to get the vitamins they need.

6Goats

Goats are herbivores and eat leaves, grains, clover, herbs, shrubs, and shrubby plants. They will also eat grasses that they find on the ground or in fields. Goats are very opportunistic when it comes to finding food sources.

7Monkeys

Monkeys are primarily herbivores and will eat various fruits, flowers, leaves, and other vegetation to meet their nutrient needs.

8Elephants

Elephants are herbivores, and they will eat leaves, grasses, twigs, shrubs, bark, nuts, berries, flowers, and roots to get the nutrients they need. They will also eat soil to obtain minerals like salt, and if no other food source is available, they will eat the bark of trees.

9Manatee

Like most herbivores, manatees eat a variety of plants. They enjoy water hyacinth, aquatic grasses, algae, and other vegetation. Male manatees have been observed eating up to 50 lbs of plants per day. It is estimated that manatees eat over 80 lbs of plants per day. This, combined with their curiosity and need to investigate objects, makes manatees susceptible to entanglement in fishing nets.

10Cows

Cows eat grass, hay, vegetables, and corn. They are also fed grain, such as wheat and oats.

11Camels

The camels live in the desert regions of North Africa and Arabia, where they spend their day eating plants, tree leaves, and bark. Yammy.

12Zebra

Zebras eat mainly grasses, leaves, and some tree shoots. They can eat up to 70 lbs of food in one day.

13Giraffes

Giraffes are herbivores animals and eat only plants and leaves from trees and bushes.

14Kangaroos

The kangaroo diet consists mainly of plants. However, kangaroos also consume insects, including cicadas and beetles.

15Hippopotamus

Hippos are primarily herbivores, eating both plants and grasses. The hippo teeth are designed to tear grasses and other tough plants. Hippos eat primarily aquatic vegetation. When plants are scarce, they prey on birds, fish, frogs, turtles, shellfish, snakes, and even crocodiles.

16Yaks

Yaks are huge animals, and they only eat plants and grasses, leaves, and roots. They are huge and heavy. The male yak is larger than the female one. It can weight up to 2,500 kg (about 5,500 lb). Its height varies from 1.5 m (4 ft) for females to about 1.8 m (5ft 11in) for males. Females weigh about 900kg (2,000 lb) while males weigh roughly 1,600 kilograms (3,500 pounds or almost three times a large gorilla!).

17Horses

Horses are herbivores and only eat hay, grass, oats, and other plants.

18Deer

Deer, including moose, elk, are animals that only eat plants. (They may also occasionally swallow some small insects, though).

Plants and herbs make up their diet, with oak leaves being a favorite plant to eat.

About 10% of the deer’s diet is acorns or nuts.

19Gorillas

A Gorilla diet includes fruits, seeds, leaves, stems, flowers. They eat the small leaves, young shoots, and buds of plants. They will also eat bamboo stems and roots.

20Antelopes

These animals eat only plants. They eat grass and leaves from trees, shrubs, etc.

21Tortoises

Tortoises are herbivores, and they primarily eat plants, leaves, flowers, and grass. However, they will also eat wheatgrass and other types of grasses.

22) Dinosaurs

At least some dinosaurs are known to eat only plants! With Brontosaurus and Triceratops, being two of them. Scientists believe that a brontosaurus had to eat 1,150 pounds a day – all plant matter!
How do animals that eat only plants get enough protein?

Isn’t it fascinating how animals that eat only plants can get as big and strong as an elephant or a hippo?

They have to get large amounts of protein. But plants contain protein as well! So they eat lots and lots of plants all day long and night!

The stomachs of these animals have the enzymes needed to digest cellulose. In addition, there is a special part in their intestines where bacteria live that produces fermentation gases that help them get energy from plant foods like bark and grasses.

For many plant-eating animals, size is a part of their survival strategy. A lion, for instance, has strong paws, sharp teeth, and fast legs to fight and defend himself against a predator. For a Hippo, being a huge and therefore dangerous animal is a good strategy to avoid becoming another animal’s lunch.
