What are elephant babies called?

A baby elephant is called a calf. And they’re cute! 

Baby elephants drink about 2-3 gallons of mother’s milk per day. They need to eat that much because they grow so fast! While a newborn Baby elephant can weigh 120 kg (264 lb.), a one-year-old can weigh over 500 kg (1100 pounds). 

Baby elephants play with their mothers and other herd members by waving their trunks around, kicking, and throwing dirt at each other, and when they get bigger, they play games like hide-and-seek with the other young ones in the herd.

Elephant Pregnancy Time

An elephant pregnancy typically lasts 22 months. At birth, an elephant calf can weigh 150 kg. The baby elephant will suckle from its mother for up to 3 years.
A newborn elephant may stand only 20 inches tall (50 centimeters) and weigh 300 pounds (135 kilograms). At birth, the calf’s skin is grayish-black and wrinkled. It has little control over its trunk.

Diet Of Elephant Babies

Elephant calves start nursing from their mothers as soon as possible and continue suckling until they are three or four years old. They can consume up to 3 gallons (almost 12 liters) of their mother’s rich, creamy milk every day! This is excellent nutrition for little ones who grow quickly into big elephants! The elephant calf is weaned at about 3 years old; it will start eating grasses, leaves, and other vegetation.
For the next 4-5 years, the baby elephant will stay close to its mother, doing what she does at a much slower pace. First, it feeds on plants and grasses in the herd’s territory and stays near her or another adult female. After that, it may start romping playfully with other youngsters. But don’t be fooled; the youngster still depends on its mother for everything.

At 5 or 6 years old, the young elephant is ready to go alone. As a result, female elephants tend to remain within their home area while male elephants travel many miles and meet females at estrus (when they are fertile and receptive).
