Can a Cat Eat Grapes?

Can a cat eat grapes?

No! Unfortunately, although some cats seem to love the sweet taste of grapes, they can cause kidney damage or even life-threatening kidney failure in cats.

They also contain lots of sugar.

If your cat does have an extreme affinity for the juicy red or green globes (and we can all understand why they do), try substituting another tasty treat instead. Some great alternatives include bananas or chewable treats that your cat would enjoy and will not hurt them at all.

You’ll still be giving your cat plenty of nutrition and a delicious treat that won’t make them sick.
Cats eating grapes may be cute to us, but don’t forget: Cats are not humans and don’t even know what they’re missing if you feed them something else that’s delicious too, but less unhealthy like bananas, blueberries, or watermelon.

What about raisins?

Raisins are just as bad for cats as grapes. It takes a much smaller quantity of raisins to poison a cat than grapes, as well. Sadly, many cats love eating raisins because they contain lots of sugar – which is delicious. That’s why it’s important to ensure that you don’t even have the smallest amount of raisins laying around that a curious kitty could eat.

What happens if my cat ate Grapes?

The ASPCA outlines much more information about the dangers of grapes for cats in this article.
If your cat does eat grapes, keep an eye on them for any symptoms that might suggest poisoning. The ASPCA lists those symptoms as; loss of coordination, excessive drooling, unresponsiveness or vomiting, and diarrhea. Those are signs to look out for when you suspect poisoning in your cat.
