10 Small Hypoallergenic Dogs

What is a hypoallergenic dog?

A hypoallergenic dog is a dog that produces fewer allergens than other dogs. Allergens are proteins produced by certain plants and animals that trigger an allergic reaction, usually resulting in annoying symptoms like itching, sneezing, red eyes or watery eyes, etc.

What makes some dogs more hypoallergenic than others? Each dog has its own unique type of dander (skin flakes). Some breeds produce lower concentrations of allergen-producing substances than others. There’s no exact measurement for the amount of allergy-causing allergens secreted by an individual dog. The best way to test your tolerance for any particular breed is to spend time around one if you can do so without contacting the dog.

Please understand that there’s no 100% allergy-safe dog as all dogs shed at least a little. In addition, all dogs have dander, and it’s a part of dog hair itself, not just the fur.

A simple allergy test can determine how you’ll react to your potential new pet. Ask your doctor about this type of diagnostic procedure if you’re interested in finding out if your family’s allergies are compatible with the responsibility of handling a dog. If you know that you aren’t allergic to the animal before adopting it, the chances are good that they won’t cause any problems.

10 Small Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds

What are some examples of small, hypoallergenic dogs? Some small breeds that are considered hypoallergenic are:

1 – Maltese
A Maltese is a small but very healthy and active dog with a gentle nature. They are friendly and loyal with outgoing personalities. They are very easy to train and usually love interacting with their family. They are playful, happy, and enthusiastic about everything so that they will keep you on your toes. They can make an excellent addition to any family.

2 – Shih Tzu
Shih Tzu’s are small, robust dogs bred to be companion animals. They are typically very active and playful. They usually get along great with children but should not be around smaller or weaker individuals because of their stubbornness and high activity levels. The Shih Tzu often enjoys games with people and has fetched balls or other toys. They have short fur with slight feathering (fringed hairs).

3 – Bichon Frise
Bichons are a playful breed that makes great companions for most families. They are highly intelligent and eager to please, so training them should be pretty straightforward. Bichons are a small dog breed, low shedding, and are considered Hypoallergenic.

They can live happily in an apartment or a house with a small yard. They do not require much exercise but will enjoy walks and playtime. Bichons love cuddling with their family members and playing games of tug-of-war with their favorite toys. This breed loves to be the center of attention!

4 – Brussels Griffon
The Brussels Griffon is an active, brave dog that loves to play. They like to be near their owner and are good at exploring. However, these little dogs are known for being stubborn and occasionally aggressive.

These dogs don’t shed much and are considered hypoallergenic.

5 – Havanese
The Havanese is an attractive, friendly small dog that makes a great companion. These dogs aren’t too active indoors but need daily walks to keep them healthy. They enjoy being around kids and other animals if they are socialized correctly at a young age.

6 – Poodle (Toy)
These dogs make fantastic family pets. Lively and playful, and highly intelligent. Poodles are a perfect choice for the active family looking for a dog that is adaptable to city or country life. The small size of Toy and Miniature Poodles makes them good apartment pets. Plus, their hair is so fine, and shedding is minimal.

7 – West Highland White Terrier
Usually just called Westie, it is a small, hypoallergenic dog breed. They have a double coat and thick hair. Their hair color is white with little gray or brown markings on the ears, face, feet, neck, or tail. Westies are affectionate little dogs that need plenty of attention from their owners and plenty of exercise.

8 – Schnauzer (Miniature)
The miniature schnauzer is intelligent, friendly, and easily trained. They make for excellent watchdogs because they’re good at sensing danger, though they’re not aggressive. Along with this, they will be a playful companion for your children.

They’re also small and hypoallergenic.

9 – Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier, usually called Yorkie, is friendly towards strangers and will do well in a house with children. The Yorkie doesn’t require a lot of exercise, but the dog does need daily walks. Yorkshire terriers can be good in apartments if they get enough exercise, but this breed needs to be kept on a leash when outside.

10 – Chinese Crested
The Chinese Crested personality is an animal that may not be perfect for many families, but it does have qualities worth considering. The Chinese Crested dog is well-liked in pet-free households and homes with small children. They might also be the dog for you if you live in an apartment without access to a yard. They will thrive happily in such a setting, as they do not have any special needs related to exercise or space.

To sum up
Again I need to mention that there’s no 100% allergy-safe dog, as all dogs shed at least a little. However, some breeds shed less than others, which can make a big difference for someone with mild allergies.
